Yosemite is one of the world’s most loved national parks. It is best known for Yosemite Valley, with its huge granite monoliths and long waterfalls; the rolling, boulder-strewn meadows along the Tuolumne River; and the rugged, snow-capped peaks of the Sierras.
The park lies in central California on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Range. The dramatic topography was sculpted by glaciers 10,000 years ago. The elevation ranges from 2,000 feet to 13,000 feet along the eastern boundary. Even though the park has 196 miles of roads, more than 90 percent of Yosemite is roadless wilderness and home to more than 750 miles of trails.
